The benefits and sensations of latex-free condoms

Condoms are typically made of latex, which is a type of natural rubber. However, in this guide, we will tell you more about the less common latex-free condoms that are enjoying rapidly-growing popularity – read on!

When to use latex-free condoms

Condoms are a great safe-sex solution. You’ll want to use condoms for safe vaginal sex both as a form of contraception and as a protection against STDs/STIs. To help protect both parties against STI transmission, condoms can and should be used during oral, vaginal, and anal sex with a new partner or if you and your partner are not exclusive.

However, some people have a latex allergy, and are therefore very sensitive to latex, which is the main ingredient for the vast majority of condoms. Symptoms of a latex allergy can be swelling, itching, burning, hives or other unpleasant responses on the skin. In these cases, latex-free condoms are the perfect alternative, allowing you to comfortably enjoy safe sex.

…and, since non-latex condoms are designed to offer a more lifelike feel and maximise sensation, they’re also an excellent option for anybody and on any occasion!

What are latex-free condoms made of?

Non-latex condoms are typically made from one of the following three materials:

Polyisoprene

Polyisoprene is the synthetic form of latex with the allergy-inducing proteins removed. Similar to latex condoms, polyisoprene condoms stretch and are effective in preventing pregnancy and STI transmission. Polyisoprene condoms are not safe to use with oil-based products.

Polyurethane

Polyurethane is a type of plastic that breaks and slips more easily than polyisoprene, and it also stretches less. Polyurethane condoms are also less effective than polyisoprene condoms with regard to contraception. Unlike all other types of condom, polyurethane condoms are safe to use with oil-based products.

Lambskin

Lambskin condoms are made from sheep intestines. Yep, you heard that correctly. These condoms are favoured by some users for their natural feel during sex. However, while the condoms can safely hold sperm, the big downside is that, due to their porous texture, they fail to protect against body fluids that could transmit STDs/STIs.

Key features of latex-free condoms – summary

  • Great safe-sex alternative for people with a known or suspected latex allergy
  • Most latex-free condoms feature an extra thin design, allowing for maximum sensation
  • Many prefer the smooth natural feel offered by non-latex condoms over traditional latex condoms
  • Unlike most condoms, some types of latex-free condom are compatible with oil-based lubricant
  • Non-latex conducts heat better, so it adjusts more quickly to your body temperature than latex
  • Latex-free condoms are made to the same stringent safety specifications as normal condoms
  • They come in various shapes and sizes, allowing you to find one that’s a perfect fit for you
  • Some non-latex materials (i.e. polyurethane and lambskin) can be less effective at contraception and STI protection than latex
  • More expensive than latex condoms

Always remember to be gentle with the condom and ensure there’s suitable lubrication first (be it natural or something from our lubricant range).
